Shot at Playa de Fañabé, Tenerife,  2019

For years, me and my family have visited the Spanish island Tenerife. A place loaded with seaside resorts, well fed British men drinking beer and big crashing waves. Not shown on the shiny holiday brochures is the heavy migrant crisis.

More than 20.000 people made the dangerous crossing from Africa’s northern western coast to the Canary Islands last year. In mind is the European mainland as the desired destination. Many of these people end up being stuck for years, with high chance of deportation.

The hard working immigrants on the beach have become an unmistakable part of the Canary Islands’ mass tourist culture.
